What happens when you take Greek mythology, mix it up with a lone spartan warrior and add in a pinch of all out brutal warfare? You get the God of War series, one of the best series to come out exclusively for the Playstation. | God of War: Ascension Review - Casually Addicted

God of War has been one of Sonys biggest named games for years and now the 6th installment takes players back to a time before God of War 1. Casually Addicted doesn't think any game will be able to match the epic impact that God of War 3 opens up with, but God of War Ascension does its best to stay true to its nature.

Richard Wakeling, Thunderbolt:
God of War: Ascension feels like the by-product of a generation that has gone on for far too long. After God of War III wrapped up the trilogy, Ascension attempts to bleed the well of Greek mythology dry even further. The third prequel in the series - and first not on a handheld device - Kratos latest violent adventure could be best described as unnecessary without causing too much fuss. With Zeus and his holy pals put on the backburner till later in the timeline, our angry antihero feels less motivated than he was in his rage-fuelled quest for revenge in God of War III - an aspect thats unfortunately reflected in the game design in what is a fairly by-the-numbers affair.

Aaron Ploof from Digibytes reviews God of War: Ascension:
"I dont know why this story needed to be told ; it seems as if the writers wanted to lend Kratos some more humanity, but they majorly skimmed on that chance. The storyline doesnt tell us anything we didnt already know about Kratos, and it gives us no hints as to where the series mythology may be heading. The only reason I can think of for its existence is to satiate the thirst of God of War fanatics for the fourth official installment."
It may seem as if I hate the game, but thats not true. Its not entirely pointless, just forgettable in every sense of the word. There are some truly epic moments in the final boss battle, but they come nowhere near the scale that was set in the past six games. God of War: Ascension is nowhere near the game it could have been."

God of War: Ascension is an interesting beast.
On one hand, it's graphically impressive and an extremely polished video game. But, on the other hand, its a frustrating mess thats full of the same issues that have plagued the franchise since its creation.

The announcement of God of War: Ascension was both a glorious moment and a moment of dread. Thoughts crossed our minds that after three brilliant games the series would be dragged on to make a little cash, though thankfully that was not the case! Ascension is a welcome addition to the series and explores another side to Kratos.
