GR: Much like the story of a certain winged Grecian chap who took a day trip rather too close to the sun, this re-hash of 2011s handheld take on the long-running airborne dog-fighting arcader looks tip-top from a distance, but get too close and its all bit bum. It starts promisingly, from when you first set eyes on the initially impressive maps, through to nodding sagely at a satisfactorily-timed missile dodge. But Ace Combat proceeds to spiral away into mediocrity, rather than ascend up to the Legacy implied in its unwieldy title.

DOID: Japanese publishers have some truly confusing localization titles sometimes. In 2011, Namco Bandai released Ace Combat: Assault Horizon for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It was a gritter take on the franchise that added real-world complexities to the established fictional formula, released to mixed reception. For some reason in that same year Namco Bandai also dropped Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy (the legacy is important, you see), which was basically a remake of 1997's Ace Combat 2 for the Nintendo 3DS. Now they've added a "plus" on the end and added amiibo support.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy+ is, for a lack of better words, a remastered game for the same platform. Nintendos decision to tweak their handheld platform to create the New Nintendo 3DS system with the addition of a C-Stick nub and additional shoulder buttons with improved processing power and an improved 3D display has paved the way for previously released games to re-arm themselves in newer versions.
