Review: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - NLife

NLife:
"Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has been Nintendo's greatest 2014 surprise, announced at E3 and rapidly turned around for a Holiday release in North America, at least. In theory it's a new IP, too, taking the cute but minor Captain Toad character and providing him with his own game; the whole concept is a spin-off from the Super Mario 3D World bonus challenges, of course, highlighting Nintendo's approach to taking a good idea and expanding it fully. The challenge is ensuring that Captain Toad and Toadette can carry a full retail game, albeit at a slightly lower price; Nintendo succeeds, for the most part."

| Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review A Turnip For The Books - Thejimquisition

Thejimquisition:
"A happy game is something this market desperately needs to see a lot more of. A totally unpretentious, colorful, cheerful videogame with no overwhelming sense of peril, no miserable characters complaining about their vapid emotional turmoil, and none of this moral choice gibberish. Dont get me wrong, I love a tragic game (This War of Mine just got a ton of praise, after all), but theres so much seriousness in popular videogames, and so few smiles. A game like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a much needed injection of genuine joy in a perpetually gloomy industry, and its unassuming arrival is a most welcome one."

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was a bit of a surprise when it was first announced at Nintendos digital E3 event earlier this year. Based off a minigame in the popular and wildly successful Super Mario 3D World, its been expanded into a disc of its own, albeit at a discounted price. While at first it may seem somewhat of a desperate bid to pad out the Wii U lineup, the end result is a puzzler well worth your time if you really enjoyed that part of last years edition of Mario.

IGN:
"Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is one of the smartest, most charming puzzle games of 2014. Id also call it one of the best platformers of the year, except these characters cant jump. It speaks volumes about Treasure Trackers wit and environment design that it completely strips us of the mobility powersthat weve come to expect from a game set in the Super Mario universe and still provides lots of interesting puzzle options."

Rooted in a side mission found in another game, it seems at first blush like a weird, downloadable lark. To be fair, it might be just that for another developer, on another platform. Quirky experiments don't belong in retail games, and that's exactly what Captain Toad is - a series of shovel hits at a very specific quarry, in all sorts of directions.
Or rather, it's a very pure expression of what Nintendo games are: playable elaborations on a strong, central concept. Nintendo games explore their root mechanics thoroughly, finding fun through solid execution and exploration of the idea. Using that as a verb, Captain Toad Nintendos. It Nintendos hard.
