GI: Kirby: Canvas Curse for DS marked one of the earliest examples of a DS game taking good advantage of the novel (in 2005) touchscreen. With players drawing lines on the lower screen to guide the hero, it was different from any platformer out there a compliment that rings true even 10 years later. Rainbow Curse on Wii U is mechanically similar to its DS predecessor, but has an incredibly charming art style (even by Kirbys high standards) and other interesting wrinkles that make it stand apart even though it gets frustrating now and then.

GT: Kirby never shies away from experimentation. The pink puff stars in a pinball game, puzzle game, and even an accelerometer game for the Game Boy Color. One of the most successful offshoots is Canvas Curse for the Nintendo DS, which smartly uses the touchscreen by guiding Kirby through hazardous courses with drawn rainbow lines. After nearly 10 years, Nintendo returns to the concept with Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. While its not an entirely successful follow-up, its nonetheless a delightful and lighthearted journey thats easy to enjoy.

GB: In 2005, owners of the Nintendo DS were waiting for a game that demonstrated the benefit of a dual-screen portable with a touchscreen. The handheld had been out for seven months, and many of its titles were ports (Super Mario 64 DS) or collections of minigames (WarioWare: Touched!, Feel the Magic XY/XX). Nintendo hadn't yet sold anyone on the notion that we needed a touchscreen-based handheld. Kirby: Canvas Curse came along in June, and was the first to really deliver on that promise. Its gameplay was simple, requiring players to draw paths on the touchscreen for Kirby to follow.

The Hub World writes: Kirby The Rainbow Curse releases today, so we thought it would be a great idea to make Kirby the star of our next Series Showdown. Kirby is the lovable pink death machine that was created by Masahiro Sakurai in 1992. Ever since his debut in Kirbys Dream Land, this pink ball of fun has been a source of experimentation for many different gameplay types. As a result, certain games in the series do not follow the actual Kirby structure (such as Canvas Curse, Mass Attack and Air Ride), and will not be included in this Showdown. Instead, we will be focusing on the main 10 platforming Kirby games.
