These 16 Surprising Games Are as Beautiful as They Are Fun

Added: 11.03.2015 14:53 | 15 views | 0 comments

1. Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery

A blocky, pixelated style doesn’t have to mean ugly visuals, as proven by this mesmerizing game.

2. Child of Light

Don’t you wish more video games had a storybook-like feel, the way this title does?

3. Broken Age

Another title that seems like its graphics sprang straight from a children’s story book that never was.

4. El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

The gameplay is pretty inane--a character named Enoch can repair his holy armor by using hearts (???). But the visuals? Stunning

5. World of Goo

Sometimes the best art doesn’t totally make sense. World of Goo definitely comes from the Salvador Dali School of Gaming.

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Sure, the third installment in the Dragon Age series features fantastic gameplay, but would you look at these costumes, please?

7. Monument Valley

Critics have slammed the game’s short length, but that’s kind of like criticizing the Mona Lisa for its small size.

8. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Reviewers have called this peaceful tale “mesmerizing,” and we couldn’t agree more.

9. BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea

Honestly, we could have picked any game from the BioShock series, thanks to its amazing aesthetic, which designers have described as a cross between 1984 and Logan's Run. Even this DLC takes the look to amazing heights. Or, rather, depths.

10. Kentucky Route Zero

What if you could play a game that looked a little like a Hockney painting? Wonder no further.

11. Ancient Trader

Some of the most beautiful art in history comes from the world of cartography, and the creators of Ancient Trader seemed to know that.

12. Gone Home

The setting may be ordinary -- an empty house -- but sometimes a story is so quietly powerful that it elevates the humdrum into something extraordinary.

13. The Cave

Sharp-eyed gamers know that this is the second title on this list from Double Fine entertainment. Maybe that’s because their visuals are double fine.

14. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Every leaf and drop of water has a realism so stunning that the player might forget to LOOK BEHIND YOU THERE’S A MERCENARY WITH A GUN.

15. Okami

Japanese myths and folklore inspire a game that looks like an ancient painting come to life.

16. Grim Fandango

The game designers turned to the Mexican Day-of-the-Dead aesthetic to create a colorful, unforgettable world -- a world that’s getting a new life this month on several platforms.

Oscura: Lost Light Review | Hooked Gamers

Added: 11.03.2015 11:18 | 1 views | 0 comments

HG: If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, indie platformer hit Limbo owes Oscura: Lost Light a giant thank you. Silhouette foreground visuals on a faded background? Check. Creepy monstrous baddies? Check. Environmental deaths coming out of seemingly nowhere to kill you? Double check. Save for its four light-shard powered special abilities, Oscura is a Limbo clone through and through. Now, taking inspiration isnt necessarily a bad thing, especially when that inspiration happens to be one of my favorite platformers of all time. But if a game is going to borrow and steal, it needs to either offer a unique twist to establish its own identity and merits or pull off what it's imitating extremely, extremely well. This is where I find fault with Oscura. It doesnt really do either. I just feel like Ive played the game a hundred times before already.

13 Games Helping Leonard Nimoy's Legacy Live Long and Prosper

Added: 09.03.2015 7:48 | 3 views | 0 comments

1. Star Trek Online

While he doesn’t actually make a physical appearance in the game, the dulcet tones of Nimoy’s Vulcan voice welcome the player to each new section. Suitably, hundreds of the game’s denizens recently gathered in tribute to the actor’s passing.

2. Dying Light

Spock’s death in Star Trek II has him shot out in a photon torpedo coffin … only to land in the zombie-infested ocean of Harran? Probably not, but the new game's odd homage to Spock carries extra poignancy with its eerie timing.

3. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary

In keeping with Spock’s views on violence, most puzzles in this adventure game for the NES eschew combat, focusing on more thoughtful solutions. For such an early title, it truly captures the spirit of the series.

4. Minecraft

Much like the Internet’s notorious rule 34, if you can imagine it, someone’s built it in Minecraft. But this to-scale fan replica of the USS Enterprise NCC 1071 looks like a true labor of love, and a wonderful send-off to Spock.

5. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

With a story even more convoluted than Spock’s alternate reality ret-conning in the recent films, Kingdom Hearts is still a great showcase for Nimoy’s voice talents as the villain Master Xehanort. Feel the darkness!

6. Star Trek: Judgment Rites

As a landmark PC game in the mid-nineties, Judgment Rites picks up right where the 25th anniversary adventure game left off. Never before have Spock’s chess playing skills proved so oddly invaluable.

7. Sid Meier’s Civilization IV

Nimoy’s voice is a natural fit for a game about improving technology and advancing the course of human progress. As the great Vulcan vociferates, “One man in his time plays many parts."

8. Seaman

One of the most bizarre games ever made also features Nimoy as a narrator, who coaches you through raising your very own creep-faced fish man, with which you communicate through a microphone. If you stare into its eyes, you’re guaranteed night terrors.

9. Star Trek Bridge Commander

This super absorbing Star Trek game creates a realistic simulation of a captain discharging orders and combatting an enemy fleet. A fantastic fan mod enlists Spock to serve by your side.

10. Iron Brigade

Double Fine gives Leonard Nimoy the double-fingered salute with their Tiki Mask upgrade. This third person mech-action title has little in common with Spock, making the reference most illogical, but still appreciated.

11. Star Trek: The Rebel Universe

A game that reaches for greatness, but falls short due to those damnable catastrophe pods! It’s still notable as one of the first games (in 1987) to feature Nimoy’s full likeness in glorious sprite art.

12. Atlantis: The Lost Empire

During the lost age of the 3D platformer, Atlantis stood comfortably among its peers. It even featured full cut scenes from the Disney film, including Nimoy’s perfect performance as the forlorn King Kashekim.

13. Star Trek Pinball

While The Next Generation claims the most famous pinball game, this earlier machine from Data East featured the original crew of the Enterprise with the sultry science officer front and center.
