Etrian Mystery Dungeon Review | NWR

NWR: On the tail end of the successful Persona/Etrian mash-up that was Persona Q, Atlus and Spike Chunsoft combined efforts are bringing Etrian Mystery Dungeon into the 3DS RPG line-up. Although Etrian has known success thus far in the west, Spikes Mystery Dungeon has mostly become known outside Japan through their collaborative titles like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. RPG fans can sate their Etrian cravings and get to know a more distant acquaintance at the same time with this enjoyable marriage of familiar dungeon crawl with randomization and tactical switch-ups.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon 3DS Review: Terror From the Deep | USGamer

USGamer: Like so many games spun off from Spike Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon series, Etrian Mystery Dungeon takes a while to get going. The first couple of dungeons feel almost hilariously toothless, and even the bosses pose little challenge. As an RPG, let alone a roguelike, EMD does not make the best first impression.

Review: Etrian Mystery Dungeon | Destructoid

DTOID: Mashups are often born purely for fanservice-related reasons, and as you can probably guess, the results are mixed. For instance, it would be tough for an RPG developer to make an action game based on two different puzzle properties, but odder mixes have been done in the past. With Etrian Mystery Dungeon, it feels like a match made in heaven. Spike Chunsoft and Atlus have been making RPGs for what seems like a lifetime, and Etrian Odyssey is basically a Mystery title already.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon doubles down on its dungeon-crawling roots | Games Beat Review

GB: Atlus surprised the role-playing world last year with the announcement of a crossover 3DS game that would have the worlds of the companys own Etrian Odyssey 3D dungeon-crawler franchise mixing with Spike Chunsofts randomized roguelike series, Mystery Dungeon. Both franchises have cult followings, both are combat heavy, and both are known for being challenging. While the news of this union was certainly exciting for fans, no one knew exactly what to expect.

In this review, Cody discusses how Etrian Mystery Dungeon gives RPG fans more out of their RPG gaming experience, stating - "Etrian Mystery Dungeon, is a game that features dozens upon dozens of hours of dungeon crawling hardcore ecstasy, that is easy to sit back and calmly enjoy until you are spiraling down into the late game difficulty."

Etrian Mystery Dungeon Review | Gamers Temple

GT: Coming off the recent Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth genre mashup, the Etrian Odyssey series is again venturing outside its first-person dungeon-crawling roots with Etrian Mystery Dungeon, which takes the Etrian world and slaps it onto the ancient rogue-like RPG game structure. While Persona Q transported the Persona series into the Etrian gameplay model, the Etrian world, this time, is the star, and the result is a game that, for the right audience, could contain a lifetime's worth of fun. For a lot of others, though, it proves to be an archaic RPG experience that touts the genre's early tropes as selling points, not the obstacles to fun that they sometimes end up being. Rogue-like fans, Etrian fans and Mystery Dungeon fans are the big winners here, but more casual RPG fans may also see this extremely deep old school RPG as more than the sum of its aging parts. Finding myself as part of at least three of those four groups, I'm still somewhat undecided on how well Etrian My...

GI: The Etrian Odyssey series has kept the sometimes-forgotten pure dungeon crawl alive and well on the 3DS, and has begun to mix things up by bringing its classic core into interesting franchise mashups such as Persona Q. This time around, the flavors get mixed up with the Mystery Dungeon series for a new tactical take on Etrian Odyssey, now with with roguelike elements and unpredictability from floor to floor of sprawling dungeons.

HD: The Etrian Odyssey series has gained a lot of traction since the 3DS's release. What began as a rather niche dungeon crawling series for the Nintendo DS suddenly gained a good deal of exposure with its first 3DS entry, 'Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan'. Since then, remakes of the first two games in the series have been announced (with the first one already released), and a crossover with Atlus' Persona series in 'Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth' introduced an even wider audience to the series' brutally difficult, but addicting dungeon crawling style.
