Best of 2014 Awards: Best Developer

Winner: Ubisoft Montpellier
We loved Rayman Origins, as did many other outlets, and to the UbiArt Engine's credit it and Rayman Legends maintain top positions in the world of platformers. Using that technology on an entirely original design plan featuring a dramatic story set during World War I struck us as original all over again. Ubisoft Montpellier have that kind of valuable experience in various franchises, but Valiant Hearts and the studio's beautiful presentation of old-war puzzle-solving earn it Best Developer this year.
Nominees: Nintendo, Turtle Rock Studios, Insomniac, Bioware, Ubisoft Montpellier

Gamingbolt:"Back in 2002, Square Enix released a little game called Kingdom Hearts on the PlayStation 2. By all accounts, it shouldnt have worked. The game was a mash-up of beloved Disney properties and Squares legendary Final Fantasy series. Crazy, right? An idea like that probably should have been relegated to the annals of history with the other weird (but very good) Final Fantasy spin-offs like Ehergiz and the Chocobo series. But then the strangest thing happened: it caught on. Kingdom Hearts would go on to become the third major pillar in Squares diverse library, spawning a number of sequels and spin-offs over a whole host of platforms."

World War I has proven to be a difficult subject to adapt into a game. While there have been attempts to faithfully depict The Great War in games, the trench-warfare aspect of the conflict makes it difficult to create engaging shooters or interesting strategy games. The harsh conditions the soldiers experienced also create problems when trying to accurately depict World War I. It is a bit surprising, then, that a side-scrolling puzzle game with a cartoonish art style is not only one of the most faithful representations of WWI, it also manages to be a fun video game with a decent amount of challenge.

Dan Naylor: "Not many video games have made me cry, but by god Valiant Hearts set me off. That finale there will be spoilers here where you think everything will be okay, but then its suddenly not. Its a sucker punch to the gut. Youve struggled to keep everyone alive, Karl is safe, youve resuscitated him three times, and hes reunited with his wife and son. It all seems to be okay. It should be okay."
