Marvel movies like Guardians, Iron Man, and The Avengers have made their fortune by being flashy, fast-paced, and most of all fun. Which makes it all the more curious that rival DC Comics has mandated a "no jokes" policy as part of its plan to take on Marvel's Hollywood empire. Last year's Man of Steel offered a remarkably grim take on Superman, and publicity stills of the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman featuring a morose Caped Crusader and an uncharacteristically bleak take on Wonder Woman have left comic fans scratching their heads. Where's the fun, they wonder?

Telltale Games' latest episodic adventure is set in the world of Game of Thrones, and the first episode, Iron from Ice, attempts to show the player just how desperate life can be for individuals who don't stand at the top of the most powerful houses. It all boils down to the land you control, and the swords you command. Power, or at least the appearance of power, is everything. It's a wonderful setting for an adventure game, but Iron from Ice spends a significant amount of time on conversations about very important things that are about to happen and all that table-setting drags the pace of the episode to a near halt."

Editor's note: "We're taking a different approach to reviews of episodic game series like Game of Thrones, in which the debut episode will be reviewed without a score, as here, and we'll review the whole season with a score at its conclusion. All things considered, I'm glad I don't have to put a score on Game of Thrones after just this episode. It's a series with potential, and one scene in particular standing out as a blistering reminder of what separates this from your average fantasy tale. At the same time though, it's my least favourite first episode of a Telltale series for quite a while, and the one that most often feels like the company finally biting off more than it can chew."

Another Telltale game, another set of screenshots. I'm still ambivalent about the oil paint aesthetic used in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series. Some shots look fantastic, and others are blurry messes with weird kaleidoscope-like effects.
