Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the best and most disappointing game of the year

Popoptiq: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain opens with an incredible hour long escape from an under attack hospital that is one of the most exciting opening hours of any video game Ive played. The game ends with a similar mission that is at once confusing, repetitive, boring and anticlimactic. Nothing sums up the final Metal Gear Solid game quite as succinctly as the bookending missions do. Its beautiful, crass, innovative, rote, clever, stupid, polished, and unfinished. This game, more than anything else so far, is the most compelling piece of evidence as to why Hideo Kojima and Konami had their public falling out throughout 2015. The game is a wonderful, ungodly mess; an $80 million game that probably needed a few million more throwing at it to get it ready for release, which presumably, Konami were unwilling to do. Its a disappointing ending for the long running series, that is also one of the best games of the year. Confused? Well, its Metal Gear, after all.

"Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain represents an evolution for the series. Transcending traditional gaming, storytelling, and art, it is a successful marriage of open world and stealth mechanics that creates an elaborate dichotomy of ideas that somehow work within the parameters of a thought-provoking and often profoundly captivating narrative."

What Does TGS 2015 Tell Us About PS4 in Japan?

Added: 21.09.2015 3:17 | 155 views | 0 comments

Push Square: "The PlayStation 4's been far from a flop in Japan since its launch last year, but it's failed to kick on in quite the way that we expected it to. The console's sold in fits and starts, with big releases like Dragon Quest Heroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain prompting numbers to increase only for them to shrink straight back down to the sorry status quo again. But platform holder Sony will be feeling confident this week, as all of the major Japanese publishers rally behind its box in an attempt to prolong the relevance of traditional gaming systems in the East."

Connected Digital World writes: One of my fondest memories of video games was during Metal Gear Solid 4. Me and a friend sat back as I guided Snake through his journey and we enjoyed the narrative unfold before us. We became so engrossed that we finished the entire thing in one sitting. Admittedly the birds were singing and the next day wasnt exactly high energy but we didnt care at all. Its one of those amazing moments of gaming that Ill never forget. So on top of the impossibly high expectations we all have for MGS I have deep personal expectations too. A tough act to follow indeed.
