DC: Combining the maddening and dedicated labyrinths of Etrian Odyssey with Mystery Dungeon's ode to indifferent but committed variability would seem to be the videogame equivalent of pushing an immovable object against an unstoppable force. It's an attractive paradox, and, rather than explode on contact, both series' unique strengths coalesce into a grueling exploration of applied skill and tough love.

GU: When one thinks of a mash-up game in the last couple years, generally its either made up of one of its parts more than the other or a deviation from both that doesnt cater to either pieces of its source material. So when Atlus and Spike Chunsoft announced their own mashup of the Etrian Odyssey and Mysterious Dungeon series it seemed like a match made in heaven, combining the party-building and story lore of the Etrian series and the hard but rewarding dungeon crawling aspects of the Mysterious Dungeon series. That alone isnt a surefire recipe for success, but both sides managed to meet that lofty goal with Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

Nintendojo: Given the number of entries released on both DS and 3DS, plenty of gamers will be familiar with both the Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon franchises, even if the latter is best known for its Pokémon crossovers. While the core mechanics of each series greatly differ, they both draw inspiration from old-school takes on the RPG genre that placed their emphasis on dungeon diving, strategic planning, and a high level of difficulty. Both franchises have earned respectable fanbases who appreciate this approach to game design. Now, Atlus has taken these two series and put them in a blender to create Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

DTOID: Mashups are often born purely for fanservice-related reasons, and as you can probably guess, the results are mixed. For instance, it would be tough for an RPG developer to make an action game based on two different puzzle properties, but odder mixes have been done in the past. With Etrian Mystery Dungeon, it feels like a match made in heaven. Spike Chunsoft and Atlus have been making RPGs for what seems like a lifetime, and Etrian Odyssey is basically a Mystery title already.

GB: Atlus surprised the role-playing world last year with the announcement of a crossover 3DS game that would have the worlds of the companys own Etrian Odyssey 3D dungeon-crawler franchise mixing with Spike Chunsofts randomized roguelike series, Mystery Dungeon. Both franchises have cult followings, both are combat heavy, and both are known for being challenging. GT: Coming off the recent Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth genre mashup, the Etrian Odyssey series is again venturing outside its first-person dungeon-crawling roots with Etrian Mystery Dungeon, which takes the Etrian world and slaps it onto the ancient rogue-like RPG game structure. While Persona Q transported the Persona series into the Etrian gameplay model, the Etrian world, this time, is the star, and the result is a game that, for the right audience, could contain a lifetime's worth of fun. For a lot of others, though, it proves to be an archaic RPG experience that touts the genre's early tropes as selling points, not the obstacles to fun that they sometimes end up being. Rogue-like fans, Etrian fans and Mystery Dungeon fans are the big winners here, but more casual RPG fans may also see this extremely deep old school RPG as more than the sum of its aging parts.
