From Bedrooms to Billions, and the Origins of British Game Development

Added: 04.07.2014 18:13 | 1 views | 0 comments

Much has been said about the history of game development in North America and Japan, but British developers were just as busy as their international counterparts back in the day; we just rarely get the chance to hear about it. , a film about the pioneer days of game development in the UK from Nicola Caulfield and Anthony Caulfield, aims to set the record straight. The enthusiast developers who forged ahead and paved the road for future generations have shared their stories, and though some of the interviewees developed successful careers in gaming, many of them failed to turn their passion projects into commercially viable products under the pressure of financially driven publishers. Regardless of the individuals' outcomes, at the start, Anthony says they all had one thing in common: "it was never for the money, only for the love." This is the story that From Bedrooms to Billions aims to tell.

The creative passions of the film's subjects inspired the Caulfields, who want to bestow these tales of love and loss to a wider audience, to preserve the early history of their corner of the industry. "We both feel this is a long overdue story," Nicola said, "and while most of the main protagonists are still around to tell the story in their own words, the time had to be now. We want a permanent record of a remarkable and creative time in UK history."

As common as the stories within From Bedrooms to Billions may be among the interviewees, the film itself is an uncommon retrospective that focuses on an oft-neglected part of the industry's past. Gaming is an international business that began in disparate, and very different, corners of the world. In order to understand how we got to this point, we have to look back, and considering how little has been said about the origins of the industry in the UK, From Bedrooms to Billions offers a glimpse into the past that would otherwise have been ignored, and at worst, forgotten.

GamerTell E3 2014 Preview: I Hunted Bugs in Flyhunter Origins

From the preview, "Flyhunter Origins is a platformer at its core, and [Jenni Lada] hoped to experience one of those levels at E3 2014. I mean, who wouldnt love to see a microscopic, alien janitor named Zak fight his way through the great outdoors, taking down flies and other insects? Alas, when I stepped up to the demo, I learned I would be facing my most fearsome foe the flying level."

Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review [Capsule Computers]

Added: 02.07.2014 7:19 | 10 views | 0 comments

Zac Elawar of Capsule Computers writes: "Valiant Hearts: The Great War follows the recent, critically acclaimed entries in the Rayman series, and Child of Light, all developed within the UbiArt Framework. Child of Light proved that Ubisoft Montreal what many would call the flagship studio amongst the lot has the breadth in creativity to create a smaller, uniquely original and off-type game by their own standards, but Ubisoft Montpellier started this trend of painterly, digital releases with Rayman Origins in 2011, and are back for some healthy, in-house competition (although, theyll never claim that) with Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Its a gutsy move, a game about the personal struggles, loss and sorrows of World War I that isnt just a downward spiral into depressionhell, its actually insane to attempt! And hard! This isnt a shooter where you can easily relish in killing the unequivocally evil Nazis, after all."
