DICE Rejects Offers To Add Gimmicks To Battlefield 4

It appears that DICE has been approached by Sony and/or Microsoft in regards to supporting motion controls for the next generation, to which it replied with an exuberant hell no.

DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach told Edge the following about Battlefield 4:
We are not interested in things that don’t make the game better. There are a lot of gimmicks - people throwing money at us - ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing’. No, it doesn’t make the game better. He added: We are extremely open to innovation, but if it’s a gimmick, there’s no point unless it adds value to the player. It appears that Battlefield 4 will only incorporate new features that offer a positive and valuable addition to the player experience; it's concerning how surprising that is to hear, not because Battlefield has a history of trying too hard, but because most other games have.

Liner Notes XVII: Game music cover bands forged in metal

Added: 16.04.2013 18:18 | 18 views | 0 comments

"(Editors note: From Ace Attorney to Xenogears, everyones got at least one videogame tune stuck in their heads. Enter Liner Notes: a Pixelitis feature in which our writers discuss their favorite videogame music.) Lets talk about the awesome combination of game music cover bands and heavy metal. One of the fantastic things about videogame music is that the styles and possibilities within the genre are endless. Us VGM audiophiles bathe in a co-culture in which a classical, choir-oriented tune like this can still be lumped in the same category as its Mega Ran-covered, hip-hop conversion. Next to assembling expansive orchestras to perform renditions of our favorite videogame music in classical arrangements, forming a heavy metal cover band is also one of the most beloved ways of interpreting everything from Actraiser to Zelda II." - Patrick Kulikowski

DICE executive producer says companies have been "throwing money" at the studio in an effort to get them to code support for motion controls.

The gaming industry's current state of motion controls is a "gimmick" and won't be featured in , according to the DICE executive producer Patrick Bach.

, Bach added that companies have been "throwing money" at the studio in an effort to get them to code support for "quirky" control schemes, but added that DICE is not interested.

#147;We are not interested in things that don#147;t make the game better,#147; said Bach. #147;There are a lot of gimmicks--people throwing money at us--#147;can you implement support for this quirky control thing#147;. No, it doesn't make the game better.#147;

#147;We are extremely open to innovation, but if it#147;s a gimmick, there#147;s no point unless it adds value to the player. Touch screens used to be a gimmick, because no one could get it to work until iPhone came out and used it right. It adds to the experience, and now everyone is doing it. To us it#147;s the same with motion control and perceptual gaming in general; if it adds, great. If it#147;s a gimmick, ignore it.#147;

Battlefield 4, which uses the next iteration of DICE's Frostbite engine, was announced with a 17-minute gameplay video at GDC 2013. The game is due to be released later this year, but so far only Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions have been confirmed.
