Nostalgia is a powerful tool in games. Half the reasons I play the games I do is because of the memories they evoke. When I play Pokemon X, I love remembering Pokemon Emerald coming with me on nearly every childhood holiday I went on. Similarly, when I play Call of Duty: Ghosts, Im reminded of all the winter months spent slaying zombies in World at War or playing Search Destroy in Modern Warfare, which I still do every summer.
Its interesting that the examples that sprung to mind when writing this the ones I gave above are in some way related to the time of year or the weather. Wikipedias entry on nostalgia notes that weather is a particularly strong trigger of nostalgia, along with music. Music is something I always pay attention to in games, even if its not prominent.
