His departure follows layoffs at the studio last month which saw an undisclosed number of employees let go and a major project cancelled.
Asmussen joined Sony Santa Monica in 2003, going on to work on the art side of God of War and God of War 2 and finally as creative director on God of War 3.
He is also believed to have been a key member behind Santa Monica's cancelled new IP. It isn't clear whether Asmusson resigned from the studio or was made redundant.
IGN reports that Asmusson is currently "interviewing at several studios".

During the presentation at the Game Developers Conference Sony Computer Entertainment mentioned just a few demos for Project Morpheus, but didnt specify any actual games in development, saying that Sonys studios are experimenting with the technology.
Industry insider Ahsan Thuway Rasheed, that normally has a quite good track record with what his sources tell him, and that has been talking about the headset for a while, mentioned a few projects in development or at least planned for the new tech.

Sources have confirmed to IGN that Stig Asmussen has left Sony Santa Monica. Asmussen commonly known in the community only as Stig joined Sony Santa Monica in 2003.
Asmussen came to Sony Santa Monica by way of Midway, where he worked for four years following his graduation from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. At Sony Santa Monica, he worked on the God of War trilogy, first as an environment artist (God of War), then as Art Director (God of War II), and finally as Creative Director (God of War III).

Rez and Child of Eden creator left studio last year, report claims.
The Child of Eden and Rez creator reportedly left the studio last year along with CEO Shuji Utsumi. CVG reports that Utsumi's resignation is "connected to an acquisition of Q Entertainment's stock by Sanyo Chemical Industries".
Q Entertainment has yet to confirm the departures.
Mizuguchi co-founded Q Entertainment in 2003 and went on to develop Child of Eden, Lumines and Every Extend Extra, and co-developed Ninety-Nine Nights 2 with feelplus.
The studio's last major title Lumines Electronic Syphony released on PS Vita back in 2012.
