Xenonauts (SteamFirst Review) -Retcom

SteamFirst: A few years ago, Firaxis gave us a treat: a true, full-fledged X-Com. It was a true breath of fresh air. Well, that is if you consider inhaling the vaporized remnants of your fallen soldiers fresh. Nonetheless, X-Com:Enemy Unknown was a remarkable installment that reinvigorated the turn based strategy genre for more than the niche market it typically serves. (Not counting the Civilization series, which is an a beast of its own.) For all the fancy bells and whistles, some of us found the overworld game lacking. The turn by turn tactical decisions that the player can make were brilliant. Unfortunately, it was not a true X-Com when one factors in the overworld gameplay. Goldhawk Interactives Xenonauts fills that void.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth Review | GameGrin

Added: 06.11.2014 12:11 | 10 views | 0 comments

Civilization in space. Its a simple, self-explanatory boardroom pitch. You can probably imagine the folks at 2K licking their lips at the financial prospects, and following the success of Civilization V, who could blame them? Of course, for developers Firaxis its about more than just Civ in space, theres a legacy here that stretches back to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, itself essentially a space edition of the core franchise. But then, for fans of the original sci-fi 4X title, it was so much more than that, it was a game that grew beyond anything the Civ franchise had managed up to that point. Today, Firaxis face the same challenge: how can they make this spin-off feel like more than a simple reskin of a tried and tested formula?

Avoiderdragon: Firaxis Games, which is mostly known for the Civilization and XCOM: Enemy Unknown series, seem to be moving forward with more games that combine turn based strategy with various themes. This new one seems to be going for a convergence of sorts by heading for the future instead of just playing with history like the Civilization series had always done, and its actually doing wonders for them.

Civilization: Beyond Earth Review [Pixel Dynamo]

There are few games that enter the world with the weight of expectation that Civilization: Beyond Earth does. Not only the latest entry in the venerated Civilization series, its also in the unenviable position of acting as a spiritual successor to developer Firaxis first attempt at taking its brand of 4X into space the classic Alpha Centauri.
