Child of Light Review - A Fairy Tale Ending? [Dealspwn]

Added: 04.05.2014 2:14 | 18 views | 0 comments

Dealspwn writes: RPG games are usually big-budget epics with the promise (threat?) of at least forty hours running time. Ubisoft's Child of Light is here to change that assumption by providing a low-priced downloadable alternative. Others have failed quite miserably (Hello, Mars: War Logs), but ze Germans made a solid effort with the tough Rainbow Moon. But with Ubisoft providing genre classics in action, shooters and platforming (Assassin's Creed IV, Far Cry 3 and Rayman Legends if you're asking), we can't wait to see how they handle an RPG.

John from We Got This Covered wrote: As a big fan of the graphical approach Ubisoft took with Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, I was definitely intrigued to hear that they were taking those games in-house engine, UbiArt, into new territory, by using it for a completely new venture into the role-playing genre. The finished product has now arrived in the form of Child of Light, and the final result is a gorgeous, engaging and surprisingly strategic RPG that skillfully mixes a fairy tale-themed world and some dashes of platforming with its turn-based combat.

The UbiArt Framework is an exciting engine in the ways it can drive creative impulse and carry artistic styles so well to the screen. Child of Light uses the framework to depart from the wacky, cartoonish aesthetics of its Rayman series predecessors and create a painterly storybook world in its stead. The creators have touted Child of Light as a modern fairy tale, and its a mantle the game wears exceptionally well.

Cev at Codec Moments write "Seemingly from nowhere comes Ubisoft Montreals Child of Light. A poetic fairytale style 2D turn based platformer on the ever familiar UbiArt Framework engine many players will recognise from the most recent Rayman iterations, Origins and Legends. The bulk of the team behind Far Cry 3 (this reviewers personal game of its respective year), bats one way out of left field from what you might expect their follow-up project to be. Is it a gleaming example of innovation, or would it be best for this child to learn to sleep with the lights out?"
