Nintendo bosses Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime demoed the new feature during the opening of Nintendo's E3 Digital Event, with both of their Miis duking it out on one of the game's levels.
Miis fight empty handed, but can be equipped with special weapons to become more proficient at range or distance, such as swords or guns.
The 3DS version of Smash Bros will launch on October 3, 2014, with the Wii U version launching holiday 2014.
Jason Rubin becomes head of worldwide studios for creators of the Oculus Rift.
Rubin made the announcement via Twitter, saying he is "Very excited to announce" that he's "joined @oculus as Head Of Worldwide Studios as of today!" along with a link to a blog post explaining the move.

Microsoft boss confirms to fan via Twitter the stage demo was from early sample of Crackdown.
In response to a fan asking whether the two were linked, Phil Spencer Tweeted "Yes. Build demo was early crackdown [sic] work."

Crackdown was unveiled for Xbox One during Microsoft's E3 press conference and is expected to come to Xbox One some time in 2015.

New to the series is a helicopter, designed to be piloted by two players: one player controls the helicopter itself, whilst the other take command of a small robot you can drop from a tether to roll around a limited area picking up loot or shooting enemies.

The four-player cooperative mode will launch as a standalone game later this year.
