Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released worldwide on September 1, 2015.
Series creator Hideo Kojima revealed the news in a video interview with IGN that a few sly folks over on NeoGAF managed to uncover early. While September may seem like quite a ways off, it's at least reassuring to know that we won't have to be waiting until 2016 to step into the shoes of Big Boss once more.

Between PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, PlayStation has the upper hand when it comes to independent games, says Mike Rose of tinyBuild Games based on his microtalk at GDC 2015 entitled "The Turning Tide: Independent Game Sales in 2015." The following figures are based on surveys and inquiries that Rose made with indie developers on sales figures, which he admits Sony and Microsoft don't particularly like developers to reveal.
Indie developer Yacht Club Games has announced that its upcoming free expansion for Shovel Knight, dubbed Plague of Shadows, will be launching during the second quarter of 2015.
Given that Guild Wars 2 released nearly two and a half years ago, it's not surprising that the announcement of Heart of Thorns, the first expansion pack for the game, received a thunderous ovation at PAX South. Sure, it doesn't have a release date yet and 30+ months of development time is certainly long for full add-on content, but Heart of Thorns does far more than just raising the level cap and throwing another tier of equipment at its hardcore base; in fact, it does neither of those things. Heart of Thorns drops those clicheĂł ideas of what an expansion pack should be like, adding a wealth of new content for PvE, PvP, and WvW as well as a progression system that enriches the development for max-level characters and lays the groundwork for the future of the series.
"What can I do for you," the Square Enix once asked.
"Release the same games over and over again," said some very vocal, apparently rich fans.
"Only if you keep giving us a shitload of money," said the Square Enix.

Curve Digital is bringing Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones to PlayStation 4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, and PC in April.
This Metroid-inspired indie title was originally released exclusively for Wii U, but it looks like Curve is hoping to expand the audience with a more widespread release this spring. Considering the rather small install base of Nintendo's home console, I'm sure the game's initial sales weren't through the roof.
It looks like a major announcement regarding the Konami's highly anticipated stealth-action game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is coming in less than 24 hours' time.

Friends, have you or someone you love been a victim of a new and horrifying disease called "amiibo shortage?" Symptoms of "amiibo shortage" include much weeping and gnashing of teeth when Wii Fit Trainer was announced as discontinued, pleading and bargaining with friends and family to stand in line with you so you can have a 10% chance of a Target having an extra Rosalina & Luma, and sudden anger outbursts when Gold Mario goes on presale while you're at work, full well knowing he'll sell out within the half hour.
[Update 1: Added a lot formation on character variations. Some characters don't have that information available, but we'll add more as that arrives.]
The character roster of Mortal Kombat X (pronounced 'X,' not "ten") has been slow but steady, as we head to its release date of April 14, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Last week, I mentioned that I was moments away from finishing Yakuza 5. Indeed, shortly after hitting "submit" on the ol' GameRevolution Post Your Shit interface, I polished it off and wrote this Yakuza 5 review over at PSLS. It's one of the longer reviews I've written, especially lately, but it's the kind of game whose pros and cons take quite a few more words than usual to describe. I enjoyed the game, but not to the extent I've enjoyed others in the series.
Did I ever tell you how exhausting it can be to create something as seemingly simple as this release list. It takes cross-referencing Steam, retailers, official posts, and Wikipedia, all of which might be wrong or not updated with the right information. I'm surprised there isn't a source out there that compiles all of the proper video game release dates in one place. It can be such a mess that some websites have a full-time database editor just to keep everything in check.
I played Helldivers in a special episode of GameRevolution LIVE today, an upcoming top-down shooter with a heavy emphasis on cooperative multiplayer. The PS3/PS4/Vita game doesn't come out until March 3rd, but there are quite a few folks with pre-release codes. That's fortunate for me, because multiplayer is where Helldivers shines most.
